The Raven's Progressive Matrices (RPM) is one of the most commonly used measures of fluid ability. Various measures have been thought to assess fluid intelligence. Like fluid ability's relation to crystallized intelligence, Piaget's operativity is considered to be prior to, and ultimately provides the foundation for, everyday learning. ![]() ![]() Crystallized ability and Piaget's treatment of everyday learning reflects the impress of experience. Fluid ability and Piaget's operative intelligence both concern logical thinking and the "eduction of relations" (an expression Cattell used to refer to the inferring of relationships). Researchers have linked the theory of fluid and crystallized abilities to Piaget's theory of cognitive development. Relationship to Piaget's theory of cognitive development In his made-up example, Horn described a boy who is too young to attend secondary school but could solve the problem through the application of fluid ability: "He may reason that if half the two-legged people are without shoes, and all the rest (an even number) are one-legged, then the shoes must average one per person, and the answer is 100." In contrast to the crystallized approach to solving the problem, Horn provided a made-up example of a fluid approach to solving the problem, an approach that does not depend on the learning of high school-level algebra. X + 1 / 2 ∗ ( 100 − x ) ∗ 2 equals the number of two-legged patients. The crystallized approach to solving the problem would involve the application of high school-level algebra. One-half of the remainder are barefooted. Some (an even number) are one-legged but wearing shoes. Horn provided the following example of crystallized and fluid approaches to solving a problem. Example application of fluid and crystallized abilities to problem-solving Examples of tasks that measure crystallized intelligence are vocabulary, general information, abstract word analogies, and the mechanics of language. Horn notes that crystallized ability is a "precipitate out of experience," resulting from the prior application of fluid ability that has been combined with the intelligence of culture. It reflects the effects of experience and acculturation. Ĭrystallized intelligence ( g c) refers to learned procedures and knowledge. Examples of tasks that measure fluid intelligence include figure classifications, figural analyses, number and letter series, matrices, and paired associates. Tasks measuring fluid reasoning require the ability to solve abstract reasoning problems. Horn notes that it is formless and can "flow into" a wide variety of cognitive activities. Fluid versus crystallized intelligence įluid intelligence ( g f) refers to basic processes of reasoning and other mental activities that depend only minimally on prior learning (such as formal and informal education) and acculturation. The concepts of fluid and crystallized intelligence were further developed by Cattell and his former student John L. History įluid and crystallized intelligence are constructs originally conceptualized by Raymond Cattell. Crystallized intelligence, on the other hand, involves the ability to deduce secondary relational abstractions by applying previously learned primary relational abstractions. Fluid intelligence is the ability to solve novel reasoning problems and is correlated with a number of important skills such as comprehension, problem-solving, and learning. According to Cattell's psychometrically-based theory, general intelligence ( g) is subdivided into g f and g c. The concepts of fluid intelligence ( g f) and crystallized intelligence ( g c) were introduced in 1963 by the psychologist Raymond Cattell. ![]() ![]() ![]() This isn't the first time Shackleton has been spotted in such a way. A joke, for example, might be perfect for a light-hearted topic but not for a more somber one. That’s why when choosing how to open your speech, it’s important to consider your topic and your audience. Or you can just dive right in and state the subject or problem if you know your audience already has a vital interest in what you will be talking about. Here are several ways you can grab your audience’s attention: a rhetorical question, a startling statement, a humorous anecdote, or a story. In fact, a 2015 study found you only have eight seconds to grab a person’s attention before they lose concentration. It’s a fantastic reminder that we need to grab the attention of our audience before we launch into our argument. He says, “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears.” Do you remember the famous line Mark Antony delivers at the beginning of his speech in the Shakespeare play Julius Caesar? Obviously, this step is all about grabbing your audience’s attention. I’ll be using quotes from Monroe’s book Principles of Speech to explain how to use the motivated sequence. Martin Luther King Jr’s “ I Have a Dream” speech follows this structure. So let’s break down each of these steps, and I’ll show you how Dr. Now, the motivated sequence is a fantastic structure for outlining your own persuasive speeches, and it’s also a fantastic structure to use to analyze great speeches in history and literature and see what made them so powerful. For example, your introduction might only be one paragraph or it could be three.īut, essentially, no matter how much time you spend on each step, you want to follow each of them in order so that you lead your audience into a certain frame of mind and persuade them of your position. ![]() Some of them might be longer, others shorter, depending on the topic you’re writing about. Each of the steps then might encompass several paragraphs, and you can think of them as sections. Most likely, however, you’ll be writing a much longer essay or speech. For example, the attention step is your introduction, then you have three body paragraphs, and then conclude with the action step. If you think back to middle school and the classic five paragraph essays your teachers would assign, you can imagine each of these steps of the motivated sequence as one of those paragraphs. Here are the five steps of the motivated sequence: With the motivated sequence, on the other hand, you take your audience on a journey and give them a solution to the problem you’re presenting with actions they can take, no matter how big or small. Many persuasive pieces just leave the audience hanging and don’t give them a pathway forward to making a positive change in the world. Monroe designed this structure so that by following each of the steps you develop a solid argument that refutes any objections and also inspires your audience to take action. ![]() Monroe developed the five-step motivated sequence in the 1930s while he was a speech professor at Purdue University. □ My Video about Four Powerful Persuasive Techniques:.□ Principles of Speech eBook by Alan H. ![]() This lets me know that you found the video helpful and also encourages YouTube to share it with more people on the platform.
